Maybe it is because I am reading about progress and creativity that I am surprised to read about the idea of small changes lead to big achievements. It seems like a no-brainer but clearly it isn’t because I read about this concept at least once per week.

Do you think that the hack your success volume is louder than the small steps volume? Is it because we have become a society of instant gratification that we don’t want to do the work anymore?

Good questions. I think for high performers, they set really big ass hairy goals. They can feel, even for those setting them, that they might be unachievable. I myself honestly believe that you shouldn't be able to accomplish every goal you set for yourself. If you are accomplishing everything that means you are capable of more and aren't thinking big enough.

So when it comes to those actions to achieve these goals, there is a feeling that the actions behind achievement have to be big as well. Every runs have to be 6+ miles. Every strength session has to be an hour. Every food choice has to leave me at a caloric deficit. If my actions aren't outrageous, how will I ever accomplish outrageous goals?

But that's not sustainable. That leads to burnout. That just isn't smart. So being able to take a step back, realize you cannot possibly be on 100% of the time, that you need rest and recovery is a gift. Making those small changes, stacked one on top of the other, are what makes change.

It most certainly is not sustainable. Burnout will happen sooner rather than later and the drop-off will be massive.

Remember the tale of the tortoise and the hare? Maybe we need to talk about that more!
